Presenter: Jamie-Lee Wagler

This interactive workshop will explore how to design innovative, play-based, and inquiry-driven before and after-school programs, while also empowering educators through the establishment of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Participants will gain practical strategies for creating engaging, child-led learning environments that foster critical thinking, creativity, and social-emotional growth in school-age children. Additionally, they will learn how PLCs can provide ongoing professional development, support collaboration, and enhance program quality. This session emphasizes the importance of community-building, both among educators and with children, fostering deeper connections that support growth, learning, and advocacy in before and after-school settings.

Moderator: Kathleen Kummen

Presenters: Sherri-Lynn Yazbeck, KimAinsworth & Narda Nelson

In our programs, children and educators co-create lively, inclusive spaces, embracing our collective responsibilities in fostering ethical relations with others, as we strive to create more liveable worlds while facing 21st-century challenges.

Presenter: Jennifer Skwarczynski

This presentation allows for opportunities for discussion about the obstacles that are present when trying to build connections in the classroom and self reflection on our contribution as caregivers and how we overcome those obstacles.

Did you know that your space tells a story? It’s our connection to the tangible and intangible aspects of our learning spaces that help us flourish, thrive, feel safe, feel welcomed and valued; bring meaning to the space around us; and help us realize and reach our full potential. We help children and families to do the same when they see themselves as part of that story. Holding the perspective of child at the centre and family at the core, intentional space design promotes inclusion and honours identity. This workshop will take participants through a series of interactive activities, to learn the story you bring to your space, and how we can honour the stories and roots of the children we care for. We’ll dive deep into the living inquiries of well-being and belonging, and ideas for engaging with others, materials, and the world, and we will explore spaces where learning and being are intertwined. No matter where you’re at in your journey - whether your space is in an older basement or will be newly built; whether you’re a new educator or established for many years - all are welcome to this session, as you are. You’ll leave this workshop with practical ideas and expanded thinking around what is possible.
